Replace a Cracked or Broken Flip UltraHD Lens

Repaired Flip

I was recently presented with a dropped Flip UltraHD that had cracked its lens, or what I thought was a lens but technically has no curvature to it so is technically best described as a dust shield, guard or cover. Regardless, it's flat circular bit of glass 1mm thick and 20mm in diameter, exactly like a watch crystal, which you can buy for $0.88 (plus $9.19 shipping) from Esslinger.com

The replacement process is trivial. Carefully slide a knife or a very thin flat screwdriver under and around the aluminium ring to remove it, be gentle or you'll end up deforming it like me (see above). Pick out the bits of glass then pop the watch crystal in and the aluminium ring back on and you're done. The one I had was pretty badly broken so I couldn't save any of the adhesive tape that held in the old glass, but if you can, I suspect it would be sturdier as a result. Nonetheless, even without the adhesive tape, the ring appears to hold watch crystal in just fine.
